This summer, we are going to have 7 interns come to Ireland; 3 interns in Dublin, 2 in County Meath, 1 in County Galway, and 1 in Athlone town. Since our local committee is based in Dublin, we will try and connect with the interns by inviting them to things in the city. Besides small day trips, we are going to have a number of weekend trips, such as Galway, Cork, Dublin, Belfast, and a surfing weekend to Bundoran. The local committee members have each been given a weekend trip to plan and we will work together to make sure it is a success!
For the Bundoran trip, which is happening from the 27th to the 29th of July, we have already 6 people attending, which includes interns and committee members. The total price of €13
9 will include transport to and from Dublin, 2 nights’ accommodation, and 2 days of surf lessons. Bundoran is a popular seaside resort in the south of County Donegal, facing onto the Atlantic Ocean. It hosts the Sea Sessions music festival every year, and is also a world-renowned surfing area, which was listed by National Geographic magazine in 2012 as one of the World’s Top 20 Surf Towns.
The Dublin weekend is set to take place from the 17th to the 19th of August. For this weekend, we have invited the Belfast LC, as part of IAESTE UK, to join us. A fun walking tour of Dublin city will be given by a local tour guide, which will finish for lunch in the famous Eatyard, next door to the Bernard Shaw pub. The Eatyard is an outdoor area with over 20 food vendors serving delicious Irish street food inspired by innovative and creative food producers.
In the afternoon, we will take the trainees to visit the Guinness Storehouse; a 7-floor interactive attraction which shows the histor
y of Guinness, which finishes in the Gravity bar, overlooking the city of Dublin. The evening will finish in a pub crawl around Temple Bar and surrounding areas. On the Sunday, we will visit the coastal town of Dún Laoghaire in South Dublin and walk along its pier, get food from the street vendors in People’s Park, and visit the Forty Foot swimming area beside the James Joyce Tower and Museum.
During the summer, the local committee hope to meet regularly to keep the spirit of IAESTE alive and to check in on our interns. We are very excited about the summer and hope that it will be the best yet!
